Women's Cross Country #2 - Seahawks shatter team time record at UMass Dartmouth (September 20, 2014)

NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina's sixth-place finish at the Corsair Invitational at UMass Dartmouth turned out to be one for the program's record books. The scoring lineup of Amy Irving (Bohemia, N.Y.), Victoria Varone (Providence, R.I.), Aubrey Palmquist (Bristol, Conn.), Alexa Cipkas (Granby, Conn.) and Olivia Wilson (Bethel, Conn.) set a school record for combined team time for 5K and recorded a few other "firsts" along the way.

Irving, Varone, Palmquist, Cipkas and Wilson combined for a five-woman team time of 1:36:00.61, eclipsing the previous school record by more than three minutes. The lineup of Caroline Norton '12, Ema Waldschmidt '14, Kayley Ryan '14, Ali Gallipoli '13 and Taylor Rosendale '12 set the former record – 1:39:11 – with their winning run at the Pop Crowell Invitational in 2011. That scoring unit averaged 19:50 per runner, with Norton and Waldschmidt running sub-20:00.

All five Salve Regina scorers broke 20 minutes in their record-setting run in September, finishing with an average of 19:12 per runner. Irving crossed the finish line at 18:37, with Varone and Palmquist not far behind at 18:56 and 19:00. Cipkas and Wilson finished at 19:42 and 19:43. It was the first time in the 33-year history of the cross country program that all five scorers broke 20 minutes at once. Irving and Varone were also the first Salve Regina harriers to break 19:00 since 1994.

"We always seem to run well at UMass Dartmouth. The team looks forward to the meet because it offers a combination of high-quality competition and a course that lends itself to faster times," said head coach Rob McGuinness. "It was just one of those days where everything clicked, and the women had such an impressive performance."
