SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) recognizes Salve Regina University freshman Victoria Varone (Providence, R.I.) with its Rookie of the Week honor for women's cross country.

Rookie of the Week - Varone finished the Western New England Invitational with a time of 19:20 that was good for second-place in the 190 runner field. Varone's 5K finish, which was only seven seconds behind the winner, helped lead the Seahawks to a first-place team victory with 55 points in the 22 team invitational.

Varone has won two weekly awards from the conference this season.

The Seahawks placed all five of their scorers in the top 25 to earn their fourth invitational championship of the season, a program record. Salve Regina finished with a team score of 55. Westfield State University was second with 80 points, and Roger Williams placed third with 136.

"This was a tremendous team effort. Victoria, Amy, Ema and Kayley have been remarkably consistent this season, and they put us in a position to win," said assistant coach Rob McGuinness.

The Seahawks return to action on Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship at the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine.
