Volleyball yields to WPI 3-2 after early lead

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Women's volleyball fell to Worcester Polytechnic Institute in a tough 3-2 loss after winning the first two sets Tuesday night at the Engineers home court, Harrington Auditorium. The nail-biting five-setter ended with a final score of 25-20, 25-20, 20-25, 23-25 and 16-18 in favor of WPI. 

The Seahawks approached the NEWMAC matchup after a fresh week of training and making improvements on the court, which showed during the first two sets. However, the team could not hang on for the duration of the contest and Engineers' comeback put them on top.

All-Time Series: Tonight's game gives the Seahawks an 0-7 all-time record against the Engineers. When the teams last contended in 2019 the Engineers won 2-3. 

NOTEWORTHY: 

  • Siena DeCicco and Lily Dobbins both led Salve Regina in assists and digs. DeCicco had 22 digs and 40 assists while Dobbins had 15 digs and eight assists. 
  • Brighton Solheim made 25 kills followed by Lydia Daskalos with ten. 
  • Sydney Ramsey had three aces and Jacey Cosciello had two aces. 
  • The top blockers for the contest were Brighton Solheim (7) and Sydney Ramsey (4).
  • Overall, the team saw 54 kills, 181 total attempts and a hitting percentage of .155. WPI's numbers included 67 kills, 186 total attempts and a hitting percentage of .194. 

COACH THOUGHTS: 

"It's never easy getting reverse swept by another team," said head coach Sebastian Noordzy. "We had opportunities to win the match, but we let a good team get too much and they took advantage."

On Friday, October 6 the Seahawks will go up against Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Mass. at 7 p.m.
