Saturday, October 30, 2021

Summary
NEWPORT, R.I. - Trailing two sets to none the Salve Regina University women's volleyball team won three straight sets to take a 3-2 (20-25, 25-27, 25-19, 25-20, 15-12) victory over visiting Suffolk University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action.

Series and Streaks
The Seahawks are 2-0 versus the Rams all-time.

Three Stars of the Match

  1. Suffolk freshman McKenna Keowen (San Ramon, Calif.) had a match-high 17 kills, four aces, and a block to lead the Rams scoring. She also notched a double-double with 15 digs.
  2. Salve Regina junior Katelyn O'Brien (Bridgeport, Pa.) had match-highs for both assists (44) and digs (27).
  3. Salve Regina sophomore Brighton Solheim (Phoenix, Ariz.) struck for 10 kills, three aces, and two solo blocks.

Turning Point
After narrowly losing the first two sets the Seahawks also fell behind early in the third. A 4-0 run comprised of three straight Rams errors and a kill from Meaghan Corkery (Saunderstown, R.I.) gave the Seahawks a 7-5 lead. The teams traded points until Madison Lee (Dover, Fla.) completed a 3-0 spurt at the end to keep the Seahawks alive, trailing 2-1. Salve Regina raced out to a large lead in the fourth set, never trailing to force a deciding fifth set. The Rams took a 2-1 lead to open the fifth, but a 5-0 answer from the Seahawks gave them the lead for good. The fifth would stay close with the teams trading points until Lee struck for her 14th kill to deliver the Seahawks a 3-2 comeback victory.

Quick Hits

  • Nicole Karabaich (Greenlawn, N.Y.) collected a double-double with a team-high 14 kills and 15 digs.
  • Madison Lee (Dover, Fla.) had tied with Karabaich for the team lead in kills while adding 14 digs.
  • Kenzley Bell (Lake Park, Ga.) led the Rams backline with 22 digs while Harmony Johnson (Riverside, Calif.) initiated the offense with 41 helpers.

Quotables
"We went into that fifth set knowing we need an aggressive mindset. We needed to attack the ball. We need to be the aggressors. I told them I don't care what the result is, but let's not go down complacent. We are going down swinging and letting the chips fall where they may."

Senior Moment
The Seahawks celebrated Nicole Karabaich and Mia Lang (Wantagh, N.Y.) before today's contest. The senior duo who comprise the team's Class of 2022 were joined by family on the court before the match for a special ceremony honoring their four years at Salve Regina.

Next Up
Salve Regina (14-9, 6-3 CCC) and Suffolk (11-16, 3-6 CCC) will await their final pairings for the CCC tournament.
