Summary
NEWPORT, R.I. - Visiting Roger Williams University swept the Salve Regina University women's volleyball team 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-15) in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Wednesday evening, snapping a four game winning streak for the Seahawks.

Series and Streaks
The Hawks own a 27-3 record in the all-time series.

Three Stars of the Match

  1. Roger Williams senior Katherine Pickard (St. Peterburg, Fla.) had a match-high 16 kills and two blocks to lead the Hawks scoring.
  2. Roger Williams senior Tori Melanson (North Attleboro, Mass.) had a match-high five blocks, four solo, six kills, and two aces.
  3. Roger Williams senior Kate Porter (Killingworth, Conn.) had a match-high 31 assists, two kills, two blocks, and an ace.

Turning Point
An 8-0 run for the Hawks with Melanson at the service stripe saw the Hawks go from down two, to leading 16-10. Salve Regina would battle back to trail by one 22-21, but two Seahawk errors sandwiched around a kill from Melanson would hand the visitors a 2-0 lead in the match. The Seahawks led briefly in the third set, 2-1, but the Hawks would pull away and never trail again on their way to a 3-0 sweep.

Quick Hits

  • Madison Lee (Dover, Fla.) had a team-high nine kills for the Seahawks while fellow senior Nicole Karabaich (Greenlawn, N.Y.) had eight kills and two aces.
  • Katelyn O'Brien (Bridgeport, Pa.) had a team-high 23 assists for Salve Regina.
  • The Seahawks committed 27 errors to the Hawks 17.
  • Defensively Jaime Gaffga (Mattiuck, N.Y.) had a match-high 16 digs for the Hawks while Kate Murphy (Dover, N.H.) led the Seahawks backline with 14 digs.

Seahawks Causes
Partnering with the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) the Seahawks conducted a raffle during the second set to raise funds directly for the Rhode Island Chapter of of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. 

"Dedicating our charity game to the AFSP gives us the opportunity to help end the stigma around mental health, especially suicide," said junior Kate Murphy. "This foundation has been something I have passionately supported over the last few years trying to raise awareness and help create a world without suicide."
