Seahawks stay hot; take down Leopards for ninth straight

SEAHAWK WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL RESULTS
Salve Regina 3, Wentworth 1
Newport, R.I. - Rodgers Recreation Center
Saturday, October 21, 2017

Summary
The Salve Regina University women's volleyball team earned its ninth straight win with a 3-1 (25-21, 25-21, 12-25, 25-20) victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup.

Series and Streaks
The Seahawks own a 14-5 record in the all-time series and have won the last two meetings.

Three Stars of the Match

  1. Salve Regina senior Samantha Salwa (Ellington, Conn.) had a match-high 36 assists while adding six digs, four kills, and two aces.
  2. Wentworth sophomore Claire Quick (Mission Viejo, Calif.) posted the match's only double-double with 12 kills and 15 digs. She also added two assists and an ace.
  3. Salve Regina sophomore Annie Donahue (Chelmsford, Mass.) tied for the match-high in kills with 16 and recorded two blocks.

Turning Point
After the Leopards dominated the third set to avoid a sweep both sides came out with great intensity to begin the fourth set. With the score knotted 9-9 Samantha Salwa set up Annie Donahue for a kill then stepped to the service line with her team leading by one. The Seahawks went on a 6-0 run, forcing to separate timeouts from the Leopards, the second coming after Salwa herself caught the defense off guard with an attack rather than setting the ball for her teammates. It fell to the floor on the Wentworth side for the point and a 16-9 Seahawks lead. A 7-2 Leopard run later would draw the visitors within three, 23-20, but a service error gave match point to the Seahawks and Salwa set up Annie Donahue for her 16th kill of the match to secure the Seahawks ninth straight victory.

Quick Hits

  • Leah Rogoz (Woodridge, Ill.) led the Leopards with 16 kills while Samantha Lassiter (Rogers, Ark.) had 10 and was the third Leopard with double-digit kills.
  • Lexie Cambray (Bedford, N.H.) had a match-high 19 digs for Wentworth.
  • Three different Seahawks posted double-digit digs, Kathryn Linekin (Ridgefield, Conn.) grabbed 13, while Sydney Puffer (Kittery, Maine) logged 12, and Cassidy Trabilcy (Phoenix, Ariz.) collected 11.
  • The Seahawks have now won nine straight matches, meanwhile snapping a ten game winning streak by the Leopards. The longest winning streak in Salve Regina program history is 10 matches, set in 2013. The next longest is a nine-match streak in 2014.
  • The Seahawks have only dropped three sets during this current winning streak, two coming in the teams 3-2 victory over St. Joseph's of Maine on October 7, and the other today versus the Leopards.
