Newport, R.I. – The Salve Regina women's volleyball team will head to Gettysburg, Pa., to open the 2014 season with a veteran group which includes four juniors, and six returning seniors.

Salve Regina, 26-5 overall in 2013, will begin its campaign on August 29 in Pennsylvania as part of the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic against Alfred University. It will be the first meeting between the Salve Regina and Alfred volleyball programs.

Third-year head coach Lauren Parsons is excited for the upcoming season and to see her squad go toe to toe with some non-conference opponents.

"We have some really tough non-conference games that should prepare us well for conference play," Parsons said. "I'm especially excited about our trip to Gettysburg. To get the team out of region and to compete against teams they have never seen is going to be very good for us."

The first home match for the Seahawks will be on September 4 (7 p.m.) when the team plays host to the Lynx of Lesley University. Salve Regina is 2-0 against Lesley all-time winning both the previous matches 3-0 in 2004 and 2012.

Parsons also spoke about the team's September 17 (7 p.m.) home match with UMass Boston, which played in the NCAA tournament this past year. "That match will most definitely test us," Parsons said, "but we have a veteran squad returning and it should be a very good match."

The first CCC opponent of 2014 will be at home on September 27 (8 p.m.) against the defending conference champions, Roger Williams. The Seahawks went 7-1 in conference play last season and hosted a CCC semifinal match, a 3-1 loss to Endicott College. Salve Regina qualified for the ECACs and defeated Emerson in the quarterfinal at the Rodgers Recreation Center before falling to Smith College in the semifinal round.

After the final home game against Emmanuel College on October 30 (7 p.m.) Salve Regina closes its regular season on the road against the University of New England on November 1 (1 p.m.).

The Seahawks open pre-season camp on Friday, August 15.
