Seahawks sweep Regis, 3-0
WESTON, Mass. - Salve Regina (10-17, 5-3 TCCC) makes Regis College's senior night no happy ending, defeating the Pride 3-0 (25-17, 25-10, 25-16.).
The Seahawks opened to an 8-3 lead before Regis would take its first timeout of the set. Senior Deanna Salter (Westwood, Mass.) opened with dominance, keeping the Salve Regina attack aggressive. Joining her with strategic kills was senior Brittney Canaff (Paramus, N.J.), who would tip a kill over the net to give Salve Regina a seven-point lead at 13-6.
Sophomore Julianne Barry (Randolph, Mass.) was consistent, aggressive, and commanding with her repeated attacks to the Regis interior. Sophomore Jessica Meyer (Seymour, Conn.) joined the offense setting Canaff into a powerful kill off a Regis defender.
The Pride took their second timeout down 21-12 to the Seahawks. Regis found itself losing its composure following consecutive receiving errors. Senior Mandy Hoyt (Madison, N.H.) attempted to dig an attack from hitting the floor, but her attempt would sail into the net, giving Salve Regina a 10-point advantage.
A ball-handling error by Seahawk freshman Megan Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass.) put Regis in position to pick up three straight points from Salve Regina. The Seahawks would regroup to take set one 25-17.
Luquet looked to keep Regis alive going into set two, assisting sophomore Lauren Ross (Dracut, Mass.) for the Pride's first kill. Barry served consecutives aces for Salve Regina, opening the Seahawks lead to 11-5.
Again Regis College would need to regroup, calling a timeout down seven points. Salter and Meyer again found one another helpful, with Salter sending repeated attacks to the Regis defense.
The pair worked together while Barry continued to serve Salve into an 18-6 lead over the Regis. Sophomore Amy Canino (Hebron, Conn.) made her first appearance with the Seahawks ahead 20-9, sending a tip attack into the heart of the Regis defense.
Luquet would set Ross for a kill to make a small impression into Salve Regina's 11-point advantage. A block by Barry would give Salve set two 25-10.
Senior Natalie Rubenoff (New Hartford, Conn.) entered set three with a kill to the right end line for Salve Regina. Trailing by one, Luquet would turn a poor pass into a Regis point. The Pride tied the score for the first time in set three at eight apiece.
An error by the Pride's Hoyt gave Salve the one-point lead, which would have sailed out of bounds if not for the touch.
Rubenoff again appeared with Salve Regina up 14-9, but this time she offered up consecutive blocks to the Pride frontline attack. With the Seahawks up 20-10, Regis hoped to regroup with a timeout.
An all-out effort by Canaff saved Salve Regina's 10-point lead. An error by freshman Sarah Showalter (East Lyme, Conn.) helped Regis, but the Seahawk hitting error may have been a little late as Salve Regina took the match 25-16.
