Bird places fourth in women's javelin, Sean Livingston Invitational cut short due to weather

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (Saturday, March 23, 2024) -- Women's track and field competed at their first meet of the 2024 outdoor season today. Hosted by Roger Williams University at Portsmouth high school. Although the event was cut short due to weather, the Seahawks still posted several noteworthy performances and withstood the storm. 

Sophomore, Victoria Bird (West Warwick, R.I.) finished fourth in the women's javelin with a throw of 28.21 meters. Additionally, sophomore Kelsey Chiasson (Oakdale, Conn.) came in sixth in the women's shot put with a throw of 9.17 meters. 

Two Seahawks raced in the women's 1500-meter run. Junior Avery Braccia (Bristol, Conn.) finished nineth in a time of 5:34.27 and freshman Grace Holmander (Cumberland, R.I.) crossed the line in 6:11.85 in 18th place. 

"Mother nature threw some challenging weather at us today but the ladies who were able to compete prior to the cancelation showed some toughness," said head women's track and field coach Andrew Furst. "I am proud of all of the ladies for showing support for their teammates and for keeping a positive attitude throughout the day. I am excited for our next meet on Saturday, March 30, at UMass Dartmouth."
