Seahawks begin the season with Furst meet on Saturday

NEWPORT, R.I.-- Head Salve Regina women's track and field coach Andrew Furst has announced the 2024 spring schedule. The Seahawks enter their inaugural season as a member of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference with the opportunity to see a fresh slate of competitors. 

The team begins the season on Saturday, March 23, at the Sean Livingston Invitational in Portsmouth, Rhode Island at 11 a.m. This is the first year of the invitational, hosted by Rodger Williams University. The event is named for Sean Livingston, who has coached the Hawks' women's and men's cross country programs since 2004. 

The Seahawks will travel to North Dartmouth, Massachusetts on Saturday, March 30, for the Corsair Classic. The meet, hosted by UMass Dartmouth, will be the first outdoor event of the Corsairs' spring season. In 2023 Salve Regina finished eighth out of 12 teams at the meet.

Fitchburg State University is holding the Jim Sheehan Invitational on Saturday, April 6. The Seahawks will race at Fitchburg, and the following weekend the team will attend the Jerry Gravel Invitational, hosted by Westfield State University. Last year six teams addended Westfield State's meet and the Seahawks finished fourth, above Mount Holyoke College and Wheaton College

Next up for women's track and field is the Trinity Invitational, in Hartford, Connecticut which takes place on Saturday, April 20. Last year the Seahawks competed at the event and returner Avery Braccia '25 finished 12th in the women's 800 meters and Olivia Forbes '24 came in 25th in the women's 1500 meters. 

The team will have the opportunity to contend with the nine other NEWMAC programs at the conference championship on Friday, April 26, and the following day. At the beginning of May, the Seahawks will see the biggest field of the season at the New England DIII Championships. The event runs on Friday, May 3, and Saturday, May 4.
