Salve Regina hosts 29th annual Grass Court Doubles
NEWPORT, R.I. - The College of the Holy Cross captured the 2013 Women's Grass Court Doubles hosted by Salve Regina University at the Tennis Hall of Fame. Crusaders reached the main draw finals of all three flights and won all three finals to finish with a maximum 12 points.
Three schools finished next with six points each, but Curry College emerged as the tournament runner-up with its head-to-head victories over Bridgewater State University and UMass Dartmouth. Seven of the eight schools in the event had a pair in either a main draw or consolation final.
The event started in 1984 and has been held at the Tennis Hall of Fame for 28 years. It has been cancelled twice due to rain and once the indoor hard courts were used at the Newport Casino. Site of the first United States championships in 1881, the historic grass courts have served as the setting for the only collegiate competition at a sports hall of fame.
"What a signature event for the university," said Salve Regina head coach Cory Tusler. "We were blessed with such good weather and you can't beat Newport with the Tennis Hall of Fame."
As the host, Salve Regina has won the event more than any other school (seven times); Holy Cross wins for the first time in 2013, its fifth year in the tournament.
The Crusaders' Flight A pair of Gini Peck-Philips and Taylor Stathis saved seven match points against Kristin Carbone and Hannah Riley of Assumption before prevailing in a match tiebreak. Assumption College had three of its doubles pairs defeated in a tiebreak.
