Salve Regina sweeps Gordon to improve to 7-1

WENHAM, Mass. - Salve Regina University women's tennis swept all nine matches from Gordon College today during a The Commonwealth Coast Conference battle in Wenham, Mass. The Seahawks (7-1; 7-1 TCCC) took three doubles matches by a combined score of 24-3.

Freshman Ana Gwozdz [Taunton, Mass.] and senior Erin Phillips [Morristown, N.J.] took care of business at first doubles with an attacking game, scoring an 8-1 decision over freshmen Carolyn Meckbach and Katherine Stephens. Senior Valerie Leso [West Warwick, R.I.] and junior Nichol Stevens [Chester, Conn.] followed by blanking Gordon at second doubles.

At third doubles, freshman Jessica Moore [Middletown, R.I.] and sophomore Karlee Walther [Natick, Mass.] completed the sweep with an 8-2 score. See video of match point on Twitter.

"Our doubles players did exactly what we asked them to do, and that is connect with each other after every point," said Seahawk head coach Ed Habershaw. "Our first and third doubles players are still in their first year with each other so it's important they learn to work together."

Moore took less time in her singles match, the first winner off the court with a 6-1,6-0 score at fourth singles. Phillips clinched the team decision with her 6-1,6-2 win at first singles. Gwozdz avoided her third-straight three-set singles battle with a 6-0,6-4 win at third singles.

Walther and Leso earned straight-set victories at sixth and fifth singles, respectively, before Stevens ended the scoring with a 10-5 third-set tiebreak victory over Meckbach at second singles.

Gordon (2-9; 2-7 TCCC) hosts Wentworth on Saturday while the Seahawks entertain the top team in the conference, Nichols College, in a 1 p.m. match on Leroy Avenue.
