Seahawks overpowered by Pioneers 2-0

NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University women's soccer faced NEWMAC institution, Smith College Saturday and were shutout 2-0 on the windy and drizzling afternoon. The Seahawks are now 1-4 in conference action and the Pioneers are 2-1-2.

Final: Salve Regina 0, Smith 1
Records: Salve Regina (3-4-4), Emerson (4-3-3)
All-Time Series: The Pioneers and Seahawks have not contended prior to Salve Regina joining the NEWMAC. Last year Smith finished out the season with an overall record of 4-9-4 and a conference record of 1-6-3.

SUMMARY:

  • 15:30 - Sara Buszkiewicz, a junior from Westminster, Mass. scored Smith's opening goal of the day unassisted. | Salve Regina 0, Smith 1
  • 19:21 - The Pioneers second and final goal of the day was scored by Sofia Romero, a freshman from Stamford, Conn. | Salve Regina 0, Smith 2

NOTEWORTHY:

  • The action began right away with Smith driving to the net and scoring twice in the first half; however the Seahawks prevented the Pioneers from gaining any more momentum after their early success and neither team scored during the second half. Salve Regina's defensive strategy grew more pronounced, yet the team was unable to get on the board.
  • Both goalkeepers remained in-net for the full 90 minutes. Seahawks' Reagan Moffatt made 12 saves and Pioneers' keeper Skylar Smith made eight saves.
  • Sarah Wiejkus led the Seahawks with four shots on goal.
  • Smith's Sofia Romero took four shots on goal followed by Melia Espinosa who took three.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH ROBERTS:

"Smith is a very good team, they came out and competed from the beginning. We allowed them a lot of time and a lot of space, and they took advantage of it, and they did a great job of it. Smith finished their opportunities, and we didn't today. I commend them for everything they've done and now we've got to look on to Clark next week."

ON THE HORIZON:

The next Seahawk contest is on Wednesday, October 11 in Worcester, Mass at 7 p.m. against the Clark University Cougars. The matchup will be another chance at NEWMAC action for Salve Regina.
