Golden Bears score late to defeat Seahawks, 1-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Junior forward Heather Mortell (Webster, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal with 37 seconds remaining in the second overtime period as the Western New England College women's soccer team upset visiting Salve Regina on Saturday, 1-0, at Suprenant Field during Homecoming Weekend.

 

Salve Regina (7-4, 4-2 TCCC) entered the match in third place in the conference standings. Western New England College improved its record to 4-6 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

 

There were many close calls for Western New England College throughout the game. Mortell hit the crossbar twice in the second half and first overtime periods and junior midfielder Shannon Pescatello (Wethersfield, Conn.) also missed a goal as her shot bounced off the top of the goalpost in the second half.

 

Salve Regina almost put the game away twice in the final frame, but junior defender Nicole Poli (Medfield, Mass.) and junior midfielder Elyse Gauvin (Swansea, Mass.) blocked both shots with five and six minutes remaining to prevent the visitors from scoring.

 

This later the set up the game winning goal as freshman forward Jena Arnister (Water Mill, N.Y.) passed up to Mortell who finished out the play.

 

Senior goalkeeper Jessica Covino (Bristol, Conn.) finished with five saves for her fourth shutout of the season.

 

Senior Katie Vaudrain (Pawtucket, R.I.) stopped five shots for the Seahawks.
