Seahawks finish season, relent 14-3 to Springfield in NEWMAC quarterfinals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Saturday, April 27, 2024)-- Salve Regina women's lacrosse qualified for the NEWMAC quarterfinals as the seventh place seed after finishing the regular season 11-6 overall and 5-5 in the conference. In the quarterfinals, hosted by Springfield College on Saturday the Pride struck early and advanced to the semifinal round, beating the Seahawks 14-3. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Records: Salve Regina (11-7), Springfield (15-3)
Last matchup: The Seahawks saw the Pride earlier in the season when Springfield traveled to Middletown, Rhode Island and Gaudet Field. The Pride won 26-4.

BREAKDOWN:

Springfield's Isabella Mazzi scored two minutes into the contest and led the way for a 5-0 first quarter and 7-0 first half. The Seahawks had yet to make it onto the board going into halftime. 

At 13:49 into quarter three Springfield turned the ball over and Holly Sullivan nabbed the ground ball. The Seahawks were successful on the following clear attempt and Edie Threshie secured the first Seahawk goal of the day at 11:48 into the quarter. 

The remaining Salve Regina goals did not come until the last 15 minutes of play. The Pride committed a foul with 7:17 remaining giving Edie Threshie a free position shot, which she converted to a goal making it a 12-2 game. Immediately following Threshie's success Holly Sullivan capitalized on a man-up opportunity to bring the Seahawks to three goals for the day. Springfield netted two additional goals in the last six and a half minutes to bring the final score to 14-3.

ON THE HORIZON: 

Today's contest marks the end of the 2024 season for Salve Regina women's lacrosse. Springfield will host Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Wednesday, May 1, in the semifinal round of the NEWMAC championship.
