WORCESTER, Mass. (Saturday, April 20, 2024)-- Salve Regina women's lacrosse secured another NEWMAC win on Saturday when the team took on the Clark University Cougars at Clarks' Granger Athletic Complex. Junior Edie Threshie and freshman Daniella Bruno were the instigators with four and three goals respectively.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Salve Regina 12, Clark 9
Records: Salve Regina (10-6, 4-5 NEWMAC), Clark (7-8, 3-6 NEWMAC)
Last matchup: Today's contest is the first ever meeting of the Cougars and Seahawks in women's lacrosse.

BREAKDOWN:

Salve Regina started the game out strong by establishing a 4-2 lead by the end of the first quarter, although after Cameron Baston's game-opening goal the cougars scored twice conservatively to make it 2-1. To overcome the small deficit Daniella Bruno added two goals and scored a free position goal which achieved the 4-2 score after 15 minutes.

It was still a close game going into halftime. Clark managed to outscore Salve Regina 5-2 in the second quarter, however given the Seahawks previously established lead Salve Regina only trailed by one at the half.

Daniella Bruno and Samantha Moleti both found the back of the Cougars' net with free position goals in the third period and the team managed to bar Clark from scoring at all in that timeframe. Salve Regina then had a one-goal advantage with 15 minutes left to play.

Holly Sullivan kicked off the final quarter with a goal two minutes into the action and the Seahawk advantage held. Kayli Garcia and Edie Threshie delivered the final blow by scoring in the last six minutes of play to make it a 12-9 NEWMAC win for the Seahawks.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Ellee Kopecky made 14 saves in 23 shots on goal.
  • Cougars' Annie Battle stopped seven shots on net.
  • The Seahawks grabbed 17 ground balls, three more then their counterpart.
  • The teams matched each other, each gaining possession off 11 draw controls.
