Women's lacrosse overcomes early deficit in 12-9 win over Wellesley

WELLESLEY, Mass. (Saturday, March 16, 2024)-- Salve Regina Women's lacrosse won their first ever NEWMAC game as a member of the conference when the Seahawk's successful fourth quarter elevated them 12-9 over the Wellesley College blue. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Salve Regina 12, Wellesley 9
Records: Salve Regina (6-1, 1-0 NEWMAC), Wellesley (2-4, 0-1 NEWMAC)
Last matchup: Last year the Seahawks overcame the Blue 17-3 on March 15, 2023. 

BREAKDOWN: 

  • IH: Thanks to Stella McCormack, the Seahawks were the first team to get on the board. Daniella Bruno's free position shot and Holly Sullivan 's goal (from Samantha Moleti) were all factors in Salve Regina's 3-2 lead after the first quarter. The Blue outscored the Seahawks 3-1 in the second period, setting Wellesley ahead 5-4 going into halftime. The solo Seahawk second quarter goal came from the stick of Samantha Moleti.
  • IIH: Salve Regina opened up the second half with four consecutive goals. The first success, belonging to Cameron Baston, was the result of a Seahawk free position shot. Daniella Bruno netted two and Kayli Garcia added to the total before the run was cut off by two Blue goals, beginning with Katie McCabe's goal with 6:47 remaining in the third quarter. Although Wellesley scored twice to begin the final 15 minutes of action, making it 9-8 with the Blue leading, the Seahawks win was solidified with the last four goals in the game. Kayli Garcia sank the last shot at 4:15 remining for a 12-9 Salve Regina victory.

Next week the Seahawks will travel to play the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford, Connecticut at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19.
