Seahawks leave Corsairs marooned in 15-10 victory

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (Tuesday, March 5, 2024)-- The Salve Regina women's lacrosse team battled the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs and careened forward with a 15-10 win, despite the Corsairs getting on the board first.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Salve Regina 15, UMass Dartmouth 10
Records: Salve Regina (4-0,0-0 NEWMAC), UMass Dartmouth (0-1,0-0 LEC)
Last matchup: Since the 1098 season the Seahawks are 14-9 against the Corsairs. On March 16, 2022, when the team's most recently met, Salve Regina won 19-6. 

BREAKDOWN: 

The Corsairs gained possession right of the first draw control and fired off the first goal of the day within a minute of the contest beginning. No scoring actions were recorded for just under four minutes but following Alix Madden's ground ball pickup and a successful clear, Kayli Garcia cut around from behind the net, passing to Holly Sullivan to bring the game to 1-1. Trinity Custodia (from Kayli Garcia), Holly SullivanKayli Garcia and Cameron Baston (from Holly Sullivan) went on to score in the first quarter, fending off the Corsairs' four goals with five. Following a free position attempt, Stella McCormack (from Kayli Garcia) started off the second period scoring. The Seahawks continued to surge forward, scoring five more goals in the second period, holding the Corsairs at three for the quarter. 

Edie Threshie (on a free position shot) and Cameron Baston (from Stella McCormack) found success in the third quarter and the Seahawks gradually widened the distance between them and the trailing Corsairs. The Seahawk's secured the win with an efficient fourth period. Cameron Baston netted two goals, both from on a man up situation. Holly Sullivan sank the final goal of the meeting on a free position shot, forcing the Corsairs to walk the plank while the Seahawks took a 15-10 victory from the bird's nest. The game goes in the books with Cameron Baston totaling five goals and Holly Sullivan achieving three.

ON THE HORIZON: 

The Seahawks will kick off spring break with a game against Eastern Connecticut State University on Friday, March 8, at 6 p.m. in Mansfield, Connecticut.
