Madden's fourth period goal boosts Seahawks above Saints

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (Wednesday, February 28, 2024)-- Alix Madden '27 led the women's lacrosse team to a 13-12 win over the Emmanuel College Saints by scoring the game winning goal with 8:36 remaining in the fourth period.

Last matchup: The Seahawks saw the Saints last on March 2, 2022. Current athletes Holly SullivanSamantha Moleti both scored, contributing to a 7-4 win. 

BREAKDOWN: 

The Saints posted the first two goals of the game. Samantha Moleti's free position shot got the Seahawks on the board with 11:31 remaining in the first quarter. Alix Madden (from Cameron Baston) tied it at 2-2 but the Saints stayed in the driver's seat for the majority of the first period. With 12 minutes down Kayli Garcia (from Stella McCormack) set the Seahawks ahead but Emmanuel's Abby Brown closed the gap for a 5-5 game going into the second quarter. The Saints scored four to the Seahawks one goal (by Edie Threshie) in the second period, giving Emmanuel a three-point 9-6 lead going into halftime. 

The turning point for the Seahawks came in the third period, when the team achieved six goals, overshadowing Emmanuel's two. With only 27 seconds left in the fourth quarter Samantha Moleti scored on a free position shot, tying the game at 12-12. Alix Madden netted the game winning goal with 8:36 remaining and the Seahawks were able to hold off the Saints as the clock ticked down to zero. Both Edie Threshie and Samantha Moleti achieved hat tricks by scoring three times across the 60 minute contest.

"We played a very talented team. Emmanuel is very completive. Through a lot of adversity with communication we were able to have an amazing comeback. I'm so proud of this team, now on to the next game." - Head coach Meg Malloy.

ON THE HORIZON: 

Next up for women's lacrosse is a home game against UMass Dartmouth on March 5, at 7 p.m.
