Second half surge lifts Colby-Sawyer past Salve Regina, 13-9

HANOVER, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team outscored the Seahawks of Salve Regina 9-1 in the second half to earn a 13-9 victory in The Commonwealth Coast Conference on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Brittney Murphy (Woburn, Mass.) gave the Chargers a 1-0 lead 1:27 into the contest. Salve Regina quickly responded 11 seconds later with a game-tying tally from sophomore Kelly Burke (Georgetown, Mass.).

The Seahawks rattled off four more goals to lead 5-1 before Murphy stopped the run with her second goal of the game. Murphy scored her third goal minutes later, but the Seahawks responded with three goals before the half to take an 8-3 lead at the break.

Salve Regina, who controlled the tempo in the first half, could not break through the Colby-Sawyer defense in the second. The Seahawks took a 9-4 lead at the 19:20 mark, but that would be the last time they would score. Colby-Sawyer picked up their offensive attack and scored nine unanswered to come from behind with a 13-9 victory.

Murphy led all players with five goals and two assists. Sophomore Laurel Bauer (Bradford, N.H.) added three goals and two assists for the Chargers. Sophomore Ashley Reis (Peterborough, N.H.) and senior Samantha Draper (Duxbury, Mass.) each added a pair of goals.

Burke led the Seahawks with three goals and an assist. Senior Nicole Viola (Scarborough, Maine) and Megan Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass.) had two goals each.

Sophomore Liz Malenfant (Siasconset, Mass.) earned the victory in net for Colby-Sawyer making eight saves. Junior Natalie Balletta (Leominster, Mass.) made 12 saves in the loss.

Colby-Sawyer will host Gordon on Tuesday at 4:00 pm, while the Seahawks will play at Regis under the lights at 7:00 pm on Tuesday.
