Seahawks beat Colonels in overtime

NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Salve Regina University beat the Curry College Colonels 2-1 in overtime on Saturday. Riley Esposito led the Seahawks with the game winning goal in overtime. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Salve Regina 2, Curry 1
All-Time Series: Going into the game, since the 2021-22 season the Seahawks went 4-1-1 against the Colonels. 

BREAKDOWN: 

  • Period I: Sydney Baxter and Soleil Archambeault of Curry were the starting goalies for the game. Curry won the opening faceoff, taken by Kyra Mittendorf and Hannah Berkowitz. In the early minutes the teams took several faceoffs, unable to get any shots off. Jillian Egan was the first to an attempt a shot, sending the puck just wide. At 3:42 into the opening 20 minutes Curry's Megan Sawatzky scored an even strength, unassisted goal for the Colonels. Sawatzky brought the score to 1-0 in favor of Curry. The score did not change for the remainder of the period. The only penalty came in the form of a two-minute interference infraction for Curry with 7:43 gone from the clock. 
  • Period II: The middle 20 minutes was scoreless for both the Seahawks and the Colonels. Early in the action Salve Regina was called for tripping, however the team did not waver on the penalty kill. Beginning at 5:25 down, Curry spent two minutes in the penalty box for hooking, yet nothing resulted from the Salve Regina power play opportunity. Going into the third period Salve Regina had a total of 35 shots, 14 saves, 19 faceoffs won and two blocked shots. Curry had a total of 15 shots, 35 saves, 21 faceoffs won, and nine blocked shots. 
  • Period III: With only 20 minutes left to play Salve Regina knew they would have to refocus to get on the board. Led by Emma Pereira, the Seahawks got themselves on the board at 8:29 into the third period. 
  • Period III: It was Riley Esposito who provided the game winning goal at 2:02 in overtime. 

NOTEWORTHY:

  • When the teams last met on February 3, 2023 Salve Regina won 3-1. Maddie Cox and Riley Esposito were the Seahawks scorers. 

ON THE HORIZON: 

On Sunday, December 3 the Seahawks return to Middletown, Rhode Island to host Curry with a 1 p.m. faceoff.
