Summary
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - The Salve Regina University women's ice hockey team earned a 3-0 shutout victory over visiting Rivier University in non-conference action Tuesday evening at St. George's.

Series and Streaks
This was the first ever meeting between the teams. The Seahawks now lead 1-0-0 all-time.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Rivier junior Madelyn Morgan (Riverside, Calif.) made 52 saves in the losing effort for the Raiders, just one save shy of matching her season high.
  2. Salve Regina junior Nicole Schneiders (Westwood, Mass.) scored on the powerplay at 8:54 of the second period for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
  3. Salve Regina freshman Ani Flaherty (Duxbury, Mass.) rounded out the Seahawks scoring with her first career goal at 18:53 of the third period.

Turning Point
The Seahawks had a 13-1 shot advantage in the first period, but thanks to Morgan's efforts in net for Rivier the game remined scoreless. Salve Regina continued to outshoot the Raiders in the second period but couldn't find the back of the net until they went on the powerplay. The Raiders had nearly killed off the penalty when Nicole Schneiders scored on a wrister from the point with just 11 seconds remaining on the advantage to put the Seahawks on the board.

In the third period Morgan's heroics in net kept it a one-score game until Emily Wagner (Andover, Mass.) netted her second to give Salve Regina some breathing room. The Seahawks kept the pressure on allowing very few chances to the Raiders and Ani Flaherty capped it off with her first career goal to end any suspense late.

Quick Hits

  • Ellee Kopecky (Warren, Mass.) made 11 saves for her first career win and shutout to improve to 1-1-0 on the season between the pipes.
