Saturday, February 20, 2016

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Leading 1-0 heading into the third the Salve Regina University women's ice hockey team found itself down 2-1 late, but senior Cheyenne Boyd (Phoenix, Ariz.) scored her second goal of the game to force overtime in an eventual tie with Saint Michael's College on Senior Night at St. George's.

Series and Streaks
This was the first ever tie between the two teams. The Seahawks still own a 19-5-1 record in the all-time series.

Three Stars of the Game
1 – Salve Regina senior Cheyenne Boyd scored both goals for the Seahawks, one coming late in the third period to tie the game.
2 – Saint Michael's junior Abby Burke (Bedford, Mass.) stopped 54 shots for the Purple Knights.
3 – Salve Regina freshman Jennifer O'Connell (Marstons Mills, Mass.) made 39 saves for the Seahawks, including a few sprawling saves late in the third and overtime to preserve the tie.

Key Stat of the Game
The Seahawks outshot the Purple Knights 56-41 in shots on goal, while attempting 31 more shots overall in the game, but the visitors converted 2-4 powerplays to steal the lead in the third period.

Turning Point
After surrendering two goals in 1:38 in the third period to fall behind 2-1 the Seahawks found a second gear and continued to pepper Abby Burke with shots, most notably Briana D'Avolio (Reading, Mass.) who recorded 15 shots alone. The Seahawks persistence paid off and with 3:10 left in the third Cheyenne Boyd put home a rebound to tie the game.
