Seahawks fall 8-2 in Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. – Senior captain Erin Martinnetted a hat trick to help pace the No. 9/7 Amherst College women's ice hockey team to a 8-2 victory over Salve Regina University in Saturday evening's non-conference contest at Orr Rink.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Amherst scored three times in the first period, twice in the second, and three times in the third to seal the victory.
  • The Purple & White was 1-for-3 on the power play, and finished with a convincing 60-15 shots on goal advantage.
  • Eileen Harris '16 got the scoring started for Amherst as she registered her first goal of the season at the 7:57 mark on feeds from Caroline Bomstein'16 and Martin.
  • Martin then notched her first goal of the contest at the 11:54 mark to make it 2-0 with helpers coming from Jocelyn Hunyadi '19 and Alex Toupal '18.
  • Briana D'Avolio pulled a goal back for Salve Regina at the 12:21 mark, but the Purple & White quickly pushed their lead back to two goals when Toupal scored at the 14:58 mark after receiving passes from Katie Savage '19 and Sara Culhane '17.
  • In the second period, Martin struck for her second goal of the game to make it 4-1 just 1:07 into the game.
  • With just 43 ticks on the clock before the second intermission, Culhane scored her first goal of the season. Hunyadi and Toupal combined again for the helpers on the play to make it 5-1 after 40 minutes of action.
  • In the third frame, Martin cashed in on her hat trick just 41 seconds into the period as Harris provided the assist that made it 6-1.
  • Just a minute later, Jamie McNamara '19 lit the lamp for her first collegiate score, following assists from Audrey Duquette '17 and Laura Schmidlein '19 to balloon the lead to 7-1.
  • The Seahawks scored again in the seventh minute of the period when Amanda Cronin found the net following a feed from Meredith Peppes to pull Salve Regina to within five (7-2) at the 6:33 mark.
  • With time winding down, Caitlyn Ryan '17 put the finishing touches on Amherst's eight-goal effort when she blasted a shot from the point to make it 8-2. Schmidlein and Lynndy Smith '17 chipped in the assists on Ryan's first goal of the campaign at the 18:43 mark.
  • Colleen Marcik (3-3-2) made 52 saves in the losing effort for the Seahawks, with 21 of those coming in the final 20 minutes.
  • Bailey Plaman '18 earned her first collegiate win between the pipes for the Purple & White turning away 13 of the 15 shots on goal that she faced.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Amherst remains unbeaten, and is one of just three teams in the country that has yet to lose a game.
