MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – The Salve Regina women's ice hockey team snapped an 11-game skid to Trinity (Conn.) Tuesday evening with a 3-3 tie at St. George's Ice Arena. The Bantams have won the previous 11 meetings between the two teams.

Sophomore Cheeky Herr (Princeton, N.J.) gave Trinity an early lead in the first period. The Bantam drew a Salve Regina penalty to set up a penalty shot chance 2:23 into the period. Herr was given the puck at center ice to go one-on-one with the Seahawk goalie and ripped a shot to the top right corner to give Trinity a 1-0 lead.

On their first power play chance of the game, the Seahawks capitalized on the man advantage to tie the game at the 6:52 mark. After winning a face off, freshman Michelle Holmes (Goffstown, N.H.) took a pass from sophomore Shelby Johnson (Sterling, Mass.) and snuck the puck under the Bantam goalie to even the score at 1-1. Just past the halfway point in the opening frame, freshman Alessendra Bravi (Montreal, Quebec) gave Trinity back the lead with a high shot from the left of the net off a pass from freshman Jessica Stowell (Hadley, Mass.) and sophomore Emma Tani (Orange, Calif.). Trinity held on to the 2-1 lead for the remainder of the period.

Just before the halfway point of the middle period, sophomore Michaela Chiuccariello (Winchester, Mass.) tied the game for the Seahawks off an assist from juniors Taylor Shepherd (Quincy, Mass.) and Sarah Markey (Ashland, Mass.). Just 25 seconds into their first power play of the second period, senior Sarah Duncan (Dedham, Mass.) was set up square in front of the net by Tani and junior Emily Riccio (Simsbury, Conn.) for a slapshot into the top of the net to once again give Trinity a 3-2 lead.

That lead would not last long, however, as Markey took advantage of the Seahawks power play just 40 seconds later. Off a pass from Shepherd and Chiuccariello in front of the net, Markey pushed the puck into the back of the net through traffic to tie the game at 3-3 with 8:14 to play in the second period.

Despite a combined 26 shots in the third period and overtime, neither team was able to find the back of the net and the score remained knotted at 3-3. Salve Regina freshman goalie Colleen Marcik (Madison, Conn.) faced six shots in the final five minutes and turned them all away to come away with the tie against Trinity.

Salve Regina returns to the ice after Thanksgiving as the Seahawks host Connecticut College on Saturday, November 30 at 7 p.m.
