Bowdoin knocks off Seahawks in non-conference action, 6-1

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team won their home opener on Tuesday evening, 6-1, over Salve Regina. The Polar Bears improve to 2-0-0 under new head coach Marissa O'Neil while the Seahawks fall to 2-5-0 with their second-straight setback.

First-year Emily Tang led the way for Bowdoin with her first collegiate goal and a four-point night while Kayte Holtz had a three point evening for the Polar Bears.

Kendra Sweet got things going for Bowdoin with her first goal of the year just 1:51 into the contest. Holtz added a tally later in the period to double the Polar Bear lead. An end-to-end rush, capped by a backhander from Jill Campbell, pushed the hosts lead to three goals midway through the second before Emily Tang knocked home a loose puck in front for her first career goal at 18:26. Salve Regina responded immediately following the faceoff as Melanie Sherlock (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored the lone Seahawks goal just 12 seconds later to trim the lead to 4-1 after two frames.

Alexandra Chlebeck scored early in the final period and Mallory Andrews added her first collegiate goal at 14:27 to round out the scoring. Sage Santangelo finished with 21 saves for Bowdoin. Ali Muehlbronner (Glenside, Pa.) played just over 56 minutes and made 34 saves. Alyssa Corvi played the final 3:51 and earned credit for a single save. Bowdoin went 2-5 on the power play, converting their last two chances, while Salve Regina went 0-1.
