Four second period goals propel Camels past Seahawks, 5-3
NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut College women's hockey team scored four goals in a span of 3:52 in the second period and went on to defeat Salve Regina University 5-3 in a non-conference game played at Dayton Arena Friday night.
The Camels even their record at 4-4 with the victory, while the Seahawks slip to 4-6 with the setback.
Five different players scored goals for the Camels, including senior Kelsey Kirker (Milton, Vt.), who potted the game-winning goal in the second period. Olivia Farrell (New York, N.Y.) tallied a goal and an assist while junior Katelyn Driscoll (Peabody, Mass.) chipped in with two assists for the home team.
Kendra Andrie (Muskegon, Mich.) finished with a goal and an assist for the visiting Seahawks. Shannon Ellis (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Kristen Aiello (Braintree, Mass) both provided scores for the visitors.
Trailing 2-0 in the second period, the Camels got on the board when senior Celia Medeiros (Portsmouth, R.I.) buried a one-timer from the slot with 9:03 remaining. Ashleigh Kowtoniuk (Johnstown, Pa.) assisted on the marker. Just over a minute later, the Camels evened the score at two. Sophomore Caroline Corbett (Norwood, Mass.) skated in with a wraparound move and connected with Farrell at the far post for a goal.
Senior Abby Hine (Madison, Conn.) put the Camels on top for good with 6:37 remaining in the middle period, when she took a Driscoll pass from the high slot and scored the 15th goal of her career. Kirker closed out the scoring surge, when she stuffed home what would prove to be the game-winner with 5:11 remaining. Jillian Dolliff (Excelsior, Minn.) and Driscoll assisted on the marker.
In the third period, the Seahawks pulled to with a goal when Aiello scored at the 5:50 mark. But the Camels got an important insurance goal from Courtney Dumont (Lewiston, Maine.) with 13:35 remaining to regain their two goal advantage. Dumont leads the NESCAC with six goals scored in a productive start to her career in a Camel uniform.
Connecticut College was able to hold on for the 5-3 victory.
Junior netminder Rebecca Simmons (Averill Park, N.Y.) made 42 saves in the loss for the visitors. Connecticut College sophomore Amy Leichliter (Westchester, Pa.) stopped 20 shots in the victory for the hosts.
Salve Regina will visit Trinity College Saturday afternoon for a 2:00 p.m. game in Hartford, Conn. The Camels will host the Neumann University Knights for a 3:00 p.m. tilt in New London.
