Cougars come back in second half to stymie Seahawks

WORCESTER, Mass. (Saturday, February 10, 2024) - Sophomore forward Sofia Neary (Wayne, N.J.) posted her fourth-straight double-double with team-highs 19 points and 13 rebounds, but it was not enough as Salve Regina University women's basketball fell by four, 86-82, against Clark University in NEWMAC action at the Hurst Courts in Worcester. Alaina Schatzabel (Kennebunk, Maine) led all players with 21 points and also had a double-double with 13 rebounds for the Cougars who improved to 15-8 overall and 5-4 in the conference. The Seahawks drop below the Cougars in the league standings (4-5) and now are 10-13 overall.

All-Time Series: Seahawks and Cougars meet for the sixth time overall and first time ever as NEWMAC members. The first three meetings occurred between 1987 and 1991. The series resumed in 2021 and Salve Regina won its only game against Clark on November 19, 2022 (72-62).

NOTEWORTHY

  • Ashley Rourke (13) and Olivia Martin also scored in double figures for Salve Regina.
  • The Seahawks had one fewer field goal made (27 to 28) and one more free throw made (22 to 21) with the biggest difference behind the arc: Clark made nine to Salve Regina's six.
  • Both teams grabbed 19 offensive caroms while Salve Regina had the edge on the defensive glass (25 to 21).
