Briana Neary, Morgan Shuey named captains for women's basketball

Briana Neary and Morgan Shuey named captains for the 2023-24 women's basketball team.

NEWPORT, R.I. -- Salve Regina University women's basketball head coach Cori Hughes announces a graduate student and senior as her squad's captains for the 2023-24 campaign. Morgan Shuey (Corning, Iowa) enters her fifth year with the Seahawks and fourth serving as captain. Briana Neary (Wayne, N.J.) starts her fourth season and first appointment as a captain as the Seahawks also enter as first-year members of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC).

"Morgan and Bri are two strong young women whose strengths really complement one another," says Hughes. "I'm excited to see where they lead us this season."

On the court, both Neary and Shuey were instrumental in a 2022-23 campaign for Salve Regina (16-10, 11-7 CCC) in their final season in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. Neary had team highs in points (378), points per game (14.5), field goal percentage (.495), and defensive rebounds (142). Shuey had the best marks for the Seahawks in 3-point field goal percentage (.354), assists per game (4.2), and steals per game (2.0).

The Seahawk captains will lead a squad of seven returners and seven newcomers while Salve Regina is the newcomer in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). With more than half of its 2023-24 schedule against non-league opponents, including a pair of games in the Daytona Beach Shootout (Dec. 28-29), Salve Regina will face its first NEWMAC competition when Mount Holyoke College visits the Rodgers Recreation Center on Saturday, January 13, 2024.
