Pendergast powers Salve Regina to victory over Middlebury, 64-46

CASTINE, Maine - Marissa Pendergast (Medfield, Mass.) led all scorers as Salve Regina University women's basketball defeated Middlebury College, 64-46, in the consolation game of the Fifth Annual Mariner Classic hosted by Maine Maritime Academy.

Middlebury (3-6) struggled with the press at the outset, watching Salve Regina (4-5) open the game with a 23-3 run over the first eight minutes. Pendergast alone matched the Panthers' production in the first half as the Seahawks took a 35-17 lead into the locker room. Pendergast finished with 25 points to lead all scorers.

Salve's Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, R.I.) was selected to the all-tournament team after scoring 12 points, grabbing six rebounds, dishing out six assists and recording five steals. Lindsay Shorey (Ashland, Mass.) recorded 19 points, nine rebounds and blocked four shots.

Middlebury got 13 points from Maddie Moreau (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) to cap her all-tournament performance. Tracy Borsinger (Chatham, N.J.) offered 11 points, five rebounds and a pair of blocks to the Panthers' cause.

All-Tournament Team: Bre Dufault (Tufts) Most Valuable Player, Caitlyn McClure (Tufts), Sam Goda (Maine Maritime), Leah Jackson (Maine Maritime), Kaitlyn Birrell (Salve Regina), Maddie Moreau (Middlebury).

The Seahawks entertain Curry College in a doubleheader at the Rodgers Recreation Center on Saturday (women - 1 p.m.; men - 3 p.m.). Both games will be broadcast on WADK-AM 1540 with Bobb Angel.
