SALVE REGINA UNIVERSITY SEAHAWKS

Seahawks defeat Suffolk in season-opener, 72-40

BOSTON, Mass. - The Suffolk University Rams dropped their 2010-11 season opener to the Salve Regina Seahawks by a 72-40 margin on Tuesday evening at the Regan Gymnasium.

Salve Regina was led by senior Erin Phillips (Morristown, N.J.) who finished the evening leading all scorers with 27 points and also had seven rebounds.

The Seahawks wasted no time getting out to a 17-3 led within the first nine minutes of the contest as Phillips accounted for 11 of Salve's points in that span. Suffolk managed to cut the margin to 10 as they went on a 15-3 run of their own to end the half as the Rams took advantage of going to the free throw line as they shot 10-for-11 from the line.

Freshman Jennifer Ruys (Wallingford, Conn.) led the Rams with 14 points, while junior Meghan Black (Roslindale, Mass.) chipped in with 11.

Freshman Marissa Pendergast (Medfield, Mass.) had 14 points and led all rebounders with eight in the game for the Seahawks.

Salve Regina had little trouble in the second half as they outscored the Rams, 40-18 in the second period. The Seahawks took advantage of turnovers as they scored 29 points of Rams' giveaways. Salve held a 46-36 advantage in rebounding as well.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Friday as they travel to Gorham, Me. to take on Southern Maine University in non-conference action. Suffolk will head up to Colby-Sawyer College on Friday to take on Westfield State at 8:00 p.m. in the Colby-Sawyer Tip-Off Tournament.
