Chargers slide past Seahawks, 68-65

NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team defeated Salve Regina, who was tied for first atop the TCCC standings, 68-65 on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers improve to 5-4 in the conference and 8-13 overall, while the Seahawks suffer just their second conference loss falling to 7-2 and 12-8 overall.

 

Salve Regina jumped out to an early 10-2 lead, which was their largest advantage, three minutes into the contest. Both teams battled back and forth for the next few minutes until Colby-Sawyer jumped on top 19-15 after a Terri Duffy (Marshfield, Mass.) layup and a Katelyn Stravinsky (Norwell, Mass.) three-pointer. The lead and momentum continued to shift for the remainder of the half. Junior Erin Phillips (Morristown, N.J.) gave Salve Regina a four-point half time (33-29) lead when she connected on a layup with 15 seconds to go.

 

The second half played out similarly to the first and featured six tie scores and five lead changes. The game was tied at 62-62 with two minutes remaining when Colby-Sawyer built a four point advantage with a pair of free throws and a jumper by Maggie Rossi (Fairhaven, Mass.). Phillips cut the lead to two with a jumper, but Rossi knocked down two clutch free throws to give the Chargers the 68-65 victory.

 

The Seahawks were led by the leagues leading shot blocker, sophomore Lindsay Shorey (Ashland, Mass.), who had a game-high 23 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. The TCCC's leading scorer, Phillips, was held in check with 15 points on 6-20 shooting. Junior Olivia Browning (Trumbull, Conn.) added six points and 11 rebounds.

 

Terri Duffy, who leads the league in rebounds, grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds to go with 19 points before fouling out late in the second half. Rossi added 14 points and five assists. Freshmen Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, Mass.) and Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) combined for five three-pointers and poured in 13 and 10 points, respectively.

 

The Chargers host Gordon on Tuesday at 5:30pm, while the Seahawks travel to Curry for a 6:00pm tilt also on Tuesday.
