Monks defeat Seahawks, 74-58

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Four players scored in double figures to lead the St. Joseph's College women's basketball team to a 74-58 victory over Salve Regina in the nightcap of the 2010 Coastal Maine Classic on Saturday at Bowdoin College. The Monks have won four of their last five games and improve to 6-4 this season. The Seahawks have lost four straight and stand at 4-5 this year.

After a tightly-played opening ten minutes, the Monks opened up an 11-point lead thanks to a 9-0 run that featured seven points from Allison Miner. St. Joseph's carried a 10-point lead into the break, 32-22, and expanded their lead to as many as 20 points in the second half. The Seahawks mounted a furious rally, thanks in part to a pair of technical fouls against the St. Joseph's bench, and used a 16-3 surge to draw within seven points with seven minutes to play. Salve could get no closer, however, as the Monks closed the game on a 17-8 run to seal the victory.

Meghan Daigle scored a game-high 18 points with eight rebounds while Allie Parent notched 13 with 10 caroms. Carolyn Freeman and Ashley Geel scored a dozen points apiece in the victory.

The Classic will come to a close on Sunday as St. Joseph's plays Skidmore on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. followed by Bowdoin and Salve Regina at 4:00 p.m.
