Seahawks sweep Cougars; Kelly notches third win of week

NEWPORT, R.I. (Saturday, April 13, 2024) - Salve Regina University softball scored a season-high 13 runs in the second game of a doubleheader with Clark University en route to sweeping the NEWMAC pair, 7-2 and 13-0, the latter in five innings at Toppa Field on a rainy and windy Saturday afternoon.

The Seahawks (10-14, 5-5 NEWMAC) reached double-figure runs for the first time in 2024 and #24 Maddie Capetta (Raritan, N.J.) went 5-for-6 in Saturday's doubleheader sweep of the Cougars (5-17, 0-8 NEWMAC) with three doubles and five runs batted in. Emily Lane (Tinton Falls, N.J.) also tallied five RBI with a two-run double in the opener and a three-run triple in the nightcap.

Freshman Emily Cronin (Coventry, R.I.) started in the circle in the opener and went five innings for the win while allowing one earned run on four hits and striking out four Cougars. Junior Alex Kelly (East Meadow, N.Y.), who set down all six batters she faced to finish the final two innings of game one, started game two and threw four scoreless frames. She also struck out four while facing just 16 batters for 12 outs. Freshman Shea Murphy (Westfield, N.J.) worked the fifth to close out the sweep and K'd two Cougars.
