CLERMONT, Fla. – The Salve Regina University softball team suffered a tough loss after a great win on Thursday at National Training Center Clermont Florida. The Seahawks fell to Bowdoin (6-5) after defeating Bates (4-3).

In the first inning of the Bates game, senior Megan Jakiela (Meriden, Conn.) reached on fielder's choice as freshman Melissa Figueiredo (East Bridgewater, Mass. ) scored and junior Marissa Simpson (Brimfield, Mass.)  advanced to third. Junior Jennifer Edine (Warwick, R.I) followed with a single to left to score Simpson and move Jakiela to second base.

Seahawks scored again in the second inning as senior Jillian Quintana (Denver, Colo.) hit a sacrifice fly to bring home senior Ali Muehlbronner ( Glenside, Pa), Figueiredo advanced to third and Simpson advanced to second on the same play.

Salve Regina held its 3-0 lead until the top of the fourth inning when Bates player Lockhart, tripled to left, allowing both Gattuso and Eliopoulos to score.

But the Seahawks increased their lead in the bottom of the forth when Quintana, reached on error by Bate's players Gattuso allowing Figueiredo to score to push the score to 4-2 in favor of the Seahawks.

Bates fired back in the top of the fifth as Freedman, singled to center, giving Lewis the opportunity to score.

The score remained the same through the end of the game with help of senior Jen Cruver (North Haven, Conn.) who struck out seven hitters en route to the Salve Regina University Seahawks win. Cruver allowed one earned run on six hits and one walk over seven innings.

Coming off a win against Bates, the Seahawks just could not repeat their success against Bowdoin.

The Seahawks had a great start to the game, jumping out to a 4-0 before Bowdoin came to bat. With the bases loaded Edine reached on error causing Figueiredo to score, Simpson to advance to third, and Jakiela to advance to second. Right after, junior Sara Nelson (Bristol, Conn.) doubled to left field, allowing Simpson and Jakiela to score, and Edine to advance to third. Edine also scored on last play.

Salve Regina held its ground until the third inning when Bowdoin players Gately, singled to third base, and DeCampo scored.

Seahawks fired back in the fourth inning when sophomore Lauren Nicholson (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) singled to left letting Nelson score, Cruver advance to third, and Muehlbronner to advance to second. The fourth inning was unfortunately also good for Bowdoin as Shirey and Mitman added two runs to Bowdoin's total.

After a quiet fifth inning on both sides, Bowdoin came out swinging in the sixth to pull within one, 5-4, with one inning to play.

Salve Regina held the 5-4 lead after its final at bat, but Bowdoin rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the game, 6-5.
