NEWPORT, R.I. - The Seahawks finished in a hard-fought sixth place at the Great Herring Pond Open hosted by Massachusetts Maritime Academy this weekend. Saturday conditions were ideal with clear skies and a steady 15 knot breeze from the southwest.

While the Seahawks had five top five finishes, the rest of the day proved to be challenging. With shifty breeze and a few tough starts the Seahawks finished the day in ninth place but still in striking distance.

Conditions on Sunday were colder with lighter winds, but allowed the Seahawks to bounce back. The day started strong with a first from A division and second from B division. Both divisions continued to stay consistent throughout the day earning a total of seven top five finishes out of the 10 races sailed. The Seahawks were able to pass the Bowdoin Polar Bears in the last race moving from seventh to sixth. Just behind Bowdoin were Tufts, Vermont, and Connecticut.
"The team showed amazing focus and determination on Sunday, and that's exactly what we want to see as we gear-up to the championship qualifiers in two weeks," remarked assistant coach Michael Komar.

Back in Rhode Island, freshman Sean Beaulieu with senior crew Catherine Corssen won their division at the Providence College Invitational. They finished with three firsts and a second in their last four races to clinch the wins over Coast Guard, Connecticut College, Brown, and Northeastern to name four of the top 12 teams. Shannon Killian and Katie Travers finished fourth in their division bringing the team to an overall third place finish.

"Salve Sailing is gaining momentum and continues to improve," commented head coach John Ingalls.

Next weekend the Seahawks will take three divisions to the Oberg Trophy hosted by MIT.
