Men's Cross Country #5 - 'Captain Jack' caps racing career at CCCs (November 1, 2014)

By Rob McGuinness

NEWPORT, R.I. - When senior captain Jack Simpson (Lynn, Mass.) crossed the finish line at the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship on Nov. 1, he closed out a racing career that aligned with the steady rise of the men's cross country program at Salve Regina.

Simpson, who played linebacker at St. Mary's Junior-Senior High School in Lynn, switched his focus to running in college. He joined a team that had only four runners on its roster and made the most of the opportunity, racing in seven invitationals and two postseason meets as a freshman. Not bad, for a former football player.

The captain, best known for his dedication and work ethic, represented Salve Regina in 32 meets over four seasons. His competitive resume included appearances in four CCC championship meets, two ECAC Division III championship meets and one NCAA Division III New England Regional meet.

The team honored Simpson with its senior award at its postseason banquet.

"Jack demonstrated, day in and day out, what it means to be a leader," said head coach Rob McGuinness. "Even before he was named a captain, Jack set the tone for the underclassmen and demonstrated what was expected of our athletes. He gave his best effort and inspired his teammates to do the same. The men on the team have the utmost respect for him."
