Lyons sweep Seahawks on the courts

NORTON, Mass. (Saturday, April 13, 2024) – The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team blanked visiting Salve Regina University, 9-0, this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at Beard Field House on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Massachusetts. 

The Lyons improve to 7-8 overall and 2-3 in NEWMAC play, while the Seahawks fall to 0-11 and 0-4.

Wheaton honored its lone senior Eli Hanlon (Branford, Conn.), prior to the match in a ceremony.

The home team swept doubles play to take a 3-0 dual-match lead, before winning all six singles matches. 

The Lyon first year tandem of Jaime Galligo (Madrid, Spain) and Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.) cruised past senior Ned Batstone (Abingdon, England) and junior Alexander Colon (Brielle, N.J.) at number one doubles, 8-2. Junior Daniel Bor (Seattle, Wash.) and first year Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.) dominated at third doubles for Wheaton with an 8-0 effort over junior Alan Guevara (North Providence, R.I.) and sophomore Charlie Cocuzzo (Madison, Conn.). 

The closest match of the day came at number two doubles. Hanlon teamed with Lyon first year Paul Berteaux (Courbevoie, France) to grind out an 8-7 win after taking the tie-breaker, 7-4, over junior Samuel Middleton (Lake Grove, N.Y.) and sophomore Jacob Faulise (North Kingstown, R.I.). 

First year Jack Thain (The Woodlands, Texas) was unblemished with a 6-0, 6-0 win at sixth singles for Wheaton over senior Jose Mayen (Cranston, R.I.), to give the home team the match's deciding fifth point, while Hanlon dropped just one game at fifth singles in a 6-0, 6-1 triumph for the Lyons over Guevara.

Galligo battled to a 7-6 (4) opening set victory over Batstone at number one singles, before settling in for a 6-2 win in the second frame to take the match for Wheaton. Berteaux won in straight sets for the Lyons, 6-2, 6-3, over Middleton. Bor surrendered just three games in a convincing 6-1, 6-2 win at fourth singles over Cocuzzo, while Murray also posted an impressive singles win for Wheaton, taking down Faulise, 6-3, 6-2 at number three.

The Lyons return to the courts on Wednesday, April 17, when they host Babson College on the Clark Tennis Courts at 4:00 p.m., while Salve Regina hosts Emerson College tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
