Seahawks take five of nine at the Big Nine

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's tennis team was edged 5-4 by visiting Salve Regina University on Tuesday afternoon at the Big Nine Tennis Courts in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play. The win pushes the Seahawks to 2-8 overall and 1-4 in the CCC while the loss drops the Colonels to 1-14 overall and 0-5 in league play.

Salve Regina secured the early 2-1 lead after doubles play, taking the points at the second and third spots. The Curry duo of Aidan Roach (Norwell, Mass.) and Richie Hefler (Canton, Conn.) topped Kevin Brocks (Albany, N.Y.) and D.J. Bisaillon (Watertown, Conn.) at first doubles, 8-5. Trevor Jones (South Hamilton, Mass.) and William Chasse (Greenville, R.I.) got by the Colonel team of Dawson Stento (Wellesley Hills, Mass.) and Nicholas Piotrowski (Groveland, Mass.) by an 8-5 final at number two doubles. Will Masse (Wyoming, R.I.) and Aaron White (Falmouth, Mass.) blanked Zach Muller (Methuen, Mass.) and Daniel Ritucci (Middleboro, Mass.) at third doubles, 8-0.

The Colonels were able to take three of the six singles points to fall just short. Roach topped Masse at number one 6-1 and 6-1. Hefler took down Bisaillon in a third set super tiebreak. Hefler captured the first set 6-3 before dropping the second 6-1. He rebounded to get by Bisaillon in the super tiebreak, 10-8. Stento picked up the final point for Curry with a 6-3, 6-4 win at third singles over Brocks. Salve Regina went on to win the final three singles matches, dropping a combined eight games in those matches.

Curry will take on CCC opponent Wentworth on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Regis College. Salve Regina will travel to Gordon on Thursday. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
