Bison too tough for Seahawks

NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University men's tennis dropped its first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match of the season with a 9-0 decision against Nichols College on the campus courts on Leroy Avenue.

The Seahawks (1-4, 0-1 CCC) had their most competitive match-up at third doubles with senior Will Masse (Wyoming, R.I.) and junior Zach Monahan (Stoughton, Mass.) marching out to a 5-1 lead. Bison freshmen Baylen Harper (Leicester, Mass.) and Sean Nutter (Mattapoisett, Mass.) chipped away at the deficit and won the last seven games, several that had back-and-forth deuce and advantage points.

In each of the other two doubles matches, Nichols (7-2, 2-0 CCC) headed into the eighth game with a 5-2 advantage.

Series and Streaks
Nichols takes an 18-17 lead in the all-time series with Salve Regina in men's tennis, including winning the last eight meetings and nine of the last 10 matches against the Seahawks. The last Seahawk win in the series came in the 2010 CCC semifinal in Dudley, Mass., with Steve Masso clinching the match-deciding victory in three sets. Salve Regina went on to win its 15th conference title. Nichols has won the last six CCC tournaments.

Salve Regina (1-4, 0-1 CCC) plays at Rhode Island College on Thursday, March 29 (3:30 p.m.); Nichols (8-2, 2-0 CCC) also played a 9-0 victory back home against Becker College today, and next hits the hard courts on Saturday, April 7.
