Wheaton comes from behind to beat men's lacrosse 13-11

NORTON, Mass. (Saturday, April 6, 2024)-- Wheaton College beat Salve Regina men's lacrosse 13-11 after going on a five-goal run to come from behind in the third quarter on the Lyons' Diane Nordin '80 Athletic Field. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Records: Salve Regina (4-6, 3-1 NEWMAC), Wheaton (7-4, 3-1 NEWMAC)
Last matchup: Salve Regina beat Wheaton 13-8 on February 28, 2018. Since the 2002 season the Seahawks have an 11-13 win-loss record against the Lyons. 

BREAKDOWN: 

Kieran Hughes won the opening faceoff and got the day going right away with the Seahawks first goal just five seconds into the action. Chris Koltzan netted the next goal just three minutes later. The Lyons prowled in with a two-goal counter move, but Koltzan and Liam Cooney each took advantage of a man up opportunity to score. With one additional Wheaton goal the Seahawks led 4-3 after the first period. 

Salve Regina went on a 3-0 run to being the second quarter, led by Koltzan, Christopher Bethoney and Daniel Naglieri. Wheaton snuck in two goals in the final 45 seconds of the second period to make it a 7-5 game at halftime with Salve Reginal leading by two. 

The Seahawks and Lyons went back-and forth for the first six minutes of the third quarter. However, after the score reached 10-7, the Lyons netted five unanswered goals to shift the game in favor of the Lyons 12-10. 

Brendan Treacy took the first shot of the fourth quarter, which was blocked by the Lyons but Justin DeBalsi nabbed the ground ball and scored right outside the crease in the first 30 seconds of the period. DeBalsi's success made it a one-point game, but Wheaton's Charlie Racine made certain the Lyons would stay ahead when he score the final goal of the day at 3:22 in the period. The contest goes in the books as a 13-11 loss for the Seahawks. 

NOTEWORTHY: 

  • Salve Regina and Wheaton both made 14 saves. 
  • The Seahawks fired off 42 shots and the Lyons took 41 shots over the course of the day. 
  • Across 27 face offs the Seahawks won 20 and the Lyons won seven. 
  • Led by Kieran Hughes, with nine, the Seahawks retrieved 37 ground balls. 

ON THE HORIZON: 

On Saturday, April 13, the Seahawks will host No.2 Babson College at 2 p.m. at Gaudet Field. The game will follow the 11 a.m. women's lacrosse home contest against Massachusetts Institute of Technology
