Second half lifts Beacons 17-15 over Seahawks, Daniel Naglieri nets six goals

BOSTON, Mass. (Tuesday, March 26, 2024)-- Men's lacrosse fell by a margin of only two points to the Beacons of UMass Dartmouth in nonleague action on Tuesday in spite of Daniel Naglieri's six goal total. The Beacons topped the Seahawks 17-15 on their home James Cotter Field in Boston, Massachusetts.

Last matchup: Salve Regina is 5-2 against UMass Boston since the 2006 spring season. On February 18, 2023, when the Seahawks and Beacons last battled, Salve Regina won 17-11. Ryan Reilly '23 was the first Seahawk to score. Reilly went on to score five times and Max Beauchamp '24, who recently reached 100 career points, netted three goals in the encounter. 

BREAKDOWN: 

Daniel Naglieri got the Seahawks an early 1-0 lead but the Beacons followed with two goals of their own. Faceoff specialist Kieran Hughes scooped up the ground ball following a Seahawk faceoff win and darted to UMass Boston's net for a goal at 11:46 remaining. By the end of the first quarter Salve Regina trailed 6-4. With Liam Cooney, Max Beauchamp and Daniel Naglieri as catalysts the Seahawks netted four consecutive goals to start the second period. The Beacons snuck in three goals of their own but Brendan Treacy and Daniel Naglieri converted to tie the game 10-10 at halftime. 

The crunch point came in the third period when five Beacons made it to the net, to fend of Daniel Naglieri and Justin DeBalsi's two-goal counterattack. Already leading by three with 15 minutes left to play the Beacons held onto their lead despite the Seahawks closing the gap to just two points. UMass Boston's Charlie Chapman sunk the final blow of the day with two seconds remaining to secure the Beacons a two-point 17-15 win over Salve Regina. 

NOTEWORTHY: 

  • William Kein made 14 saves on 31 shots. 
  • UMass Boston's James Boldy posted 14 stops on 29 shots. 
  • The Seahawks outshot the Beacons 47-44. 
  • Salve Regina nabbed 48 to UMass Boston's 37 ground balls. 
  • Max BeauchampJustin DeBalsi, and Liam Cooney all scored twice. 

ON THE HORIZON: 

On Friday, March 29, Salve Regina will trek to Boston, Massachusetts to contend with NEWMAC competitor Emerson College at 7 p.m.
