Seahawks remain unbeaten in conference, vanquish Cougars 19-5

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (Saturday, March 23, 2024)-- Men's lacrosse remains undefeated in NEWMAC action (2-0) after pummeling the Clark University Cougars 19-5 on a rainy Saturday at Gaudet Field.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Salve Regina 19, Clark 5
Records: Salve Regina (3-4, 2-0 NEWMAC), Clark (3-6, 0-2 NEWMAC)
Last matchup: Going into the game the Seahawks and Cougars were tied 7-7 all-time since the 1998 spring season. The last meeting was a 14-6 Seahawk win on March 11, 2023. 

BREAKDOWN: 

Although the Cougars were the first to strike, when Matthew Minkwitz scored two minutes into the encounter, the Seahawks did not falter by following with five goals of their own in the first quarter. Liam Marr (from Max Beaucham) netted Salve Regina's first goal 50 seconds after Clark's initial snipe. Justin DeBalsi tallied two of his three goals in the first quarter. Grant Willoe (from Daniel Naglieri) took charge of the second quarter to extend Salve Regina's lead to 6-1. With the exception of one more Cougar conversion, the Seahawks forged ahead to lead 10-2 going into halftime. Brendan Treacy shot off all three of his goals for the day consecutively in the second period, all assisted by Max Beauchamp

Clark recuperated for three successes in the third period, but not without allowing seven Seahawk goals. Ryan Bothe sank the last two points of the day for Salve Regina in the final 15 minutes which proved to be the nail in the coffin in the Seahawks 19-5 NEWMAC defeat of the Cougars. Brendan Treacy and Justin DeBalsi each recorded hat tricks. Ryan BotheChris Koltzan and Stephen McAllister pitched in with two goals apiece. 

NOTEWORTHY: 

  • William Kein earns the win after starting in between the posts for Salve Regina. Kein made eight stops. Andrew Hazard and Rowan Caffrey added in with two saves each. 
  • Salve Regina outshot Clark 54-28. 
  • With the help of faceoff specialists Kieran HughesAdam Laber and Aidan Walsh the Seahawks won 20 to the Cougars eight faceoffs. Hughes went 14-18 on faceoffs. 
  • Salve Regina nabbed 53 ground balls. 

ON THE HORIZON: 

Men's lacrosse is back at it on Tuesday, March 26, against UMass Boston on the James Cotter Field at 7 p.m.
