Barbone shines for Seahawks

BIDDEFORD, Maine - Freshman attack Mason Barbone scored a new career-best five goals to help lead the Salve Regina University men's lacrosse team over the University of New England, 17-8, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup at UNE Blue Bolt Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Nor'easters (4-9, 0-4 CCC) raced out to a quick 2-0 lead at the 12:02 mark of the first quarter after goals by Kyle Kennedy and Cam Mann. Barbone answered with back-to-back scores to tie the game and start a 5-0 run for the Seahawks who pulled in front 5-2 with 1:23 to play in the quarter. Hazard buried an unassisted goal in the final minute to cut the UNE deficit to 5-3 after one.
 
Salve Regina (6-4, 4-0 CCC) continued to extend its lead with goals by Brendan Laundry, Pat Leary, and Jack Naglieri to make it 8-3 midway through the second quarter. Alden Balboni and Jordan White each had a tally only 40 seconds apart to bring UNE within three at 8-5, but it would be the closest the hosts would get the rest of the afternoon. Laundry and Max Beauchamp each had a goal and assist while Barbone added his third of the day down the stretch of the first half to make to 11-5 at the break.
 
The Seahawks opened up a 16-6 lead after three quarters. Kennedy and Colin Watt provided goals for the Nor'easters in the fourth.
 
Barbone finished with seven points, adding two assists to his five goals. Leary scored four goals and added two assists. Beauchamp had a goal and five assists to go with a team-high five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
 
Cole Ventimiglia picked up a game-high six ground balls and three caused turnovers for UNE. Andrew Lawrence dished out two assists to lead the Nor'easters
 
In goal, Ryan Chambers made 12 saves in the victory. Matt Deyette (4 saves) and Alex Thoms (6 saves) each played a half in net for UNE.
