Seahawks surge past Wildcats in second-half

PROVIDENCE, RI– The Johnson & Wales University men's lacrosse team went on a 7-0 run to take the lead against Salve Regina University. Unfortunately, the Seahawks responded with a 9-1 second-half run as they defeated the Wildcats, 11-10, on Tuesday.

Johnson & Wales: 5-3

Statistical Leaders:

Eric Russo (JWU): 2 goals, 2 gb
Alex Makoske (SRU): 5 goals

Of Note:
Johnson & Wales took a 4-3 lead in the first quarter on back-to-back goals by attacker Max Stone (Burlington, Conn.).

Eric Russo (West Grove, Pa.) notched his second goal just five minutes into the third quarter to stake JWU to a 9-3 advantage. Stone scored his fourth goal at the 11:39 mark of the fourth quarter to stop a 5-0 Salve Regina run and give the Wildcats a 10-8 lead.

That would be the last JWU goal of the night as SRU's Alex Makoske tallied the final two of his game-high five goals to draw the Seahawks even at 10-10. Andrew Fera recorded the eventual game winner – his third goal of the night – with 3:49 remaining. Stone had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds but his shot hit the post.

Salve Regina won 15-of-24 faceoffs – including 8-12 in the second half – that allowed it to control the game. The Seahawks also picked up 31 ground balls, compared to 21 by the Wildcats. In the second half the ground ball discrepancy was 18-7 in favor of the visitors.
