Seahawks announce staff changes for 2016 season

Associate Head Coach

Salve Regina University men's lacrosse head coach Pat Cooney has announced that David Haddeland has been promoted to associate head coach.  Haddeland enters his fourth year as the Seahawks offensive coordinator.  In his first three years, he has helped lead the team to a 28-22 record, including a 15-5 record and the New England ECAC Championship in 2014. That year the Seahawks' offense set single season school records, points (409), points per game (20.45), goals (268), goals per game (13.4), assists (141), assists per game (7.05), man up goals (37), and most importantly, wins (15). 

"Coach Haddeland has played a vital role in the team's progression over the last three years.  He has helped the Seahawk offense compete at the highest level.  Dave has been invaluable in the development and mentoring of our student-athletes."

In 2016, Coach Haddy returns on offense the entire 2015 EMO as well as 95% of 2015 scoring, including all-time assist leader Nick LoCicero'17 (93).  Haddeland is a graduate of Springfield College, class of 2003. He works as a Physical Education teacher at Bishop Hendricken High School, as well as coaching Football for the 6 time Division 1 State Champions.

Volunteer Assistants

Jeff Farrar and Mike Horn will join the Seahawks for the 2016 season as volunteer assistants. 

"We are excited about having Coach Farrar and Coach Horn join the team for the 2016 campaign.  Both men have a passion for lacrosse and leading young men.  I know the addition of Jeff and Mike will benefit the student-athletes on & off the field."

Jeff Farrar rejoins the college coaching ranks after last helping to coach the Crimson of Harvard University.   A two sport student-athlete (ice hockey & lacrosse), Farrar is a graduate of Cornell University, class of 1979.  He played for the Big Red's 2 time NCAA National Championship men's lacrosse team.  He comes to the Seahawks after establishing and developing Farrar Equities, a diversified investment, development and management company with offices in Newport, RI and Stuart, FL.  His company has interests in unique resort hospitality properties throughout the east coast.  Farrar also owns and manages the iconic White Horse Tavern, one of Rhode Island's premier fine dining restaurants, in Newport, RI.  A native of Cambridge, MA, Farrar is expected to focus on the midfielders.

Mike Horn returns to Seahawks sideline after graduating Salve Regina University in 2013.  Horn, a standout defenseman for the Seahawks, was elected captain in 2013.  Horn also served as a two year member of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC).  He was a member of the CCC All-Academic Team.  The first time coach is currently a Newport Police Officer serving on the force since graduation.  He is currently enrolled in the ADJ & Homeland Security Master's Program.  A native of Marston Mills, MA, Horn is expected to focus on the defensemen.

Director of Athletics

Jody Mooradian, formally the Senior Associate Athletics Director/Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) at Boston College, has been named director of athletics at Salve Regina, effective Jan. 11, 2016.

"We are excited to welcome Jody Mooradian to Salve Regina," said Barbara LoMonaco, vice president for student affairs. "Her breadth and depth of experience in college athletics and her student-centered approach will be incredible assets to the athletics department."

During her 12 years at Boston College, Mooradian helped manage the Division I athletics program encompassing 750 student athletes and a $68 million budget across 31 sports. Her student athletes boast a 97 percent graduation rate. She brings to Salve Regina extensive experience in strategic planning, alumni engagement, development, marketing, institutional diversity, capital projects and more.  Among her many duties at BC, she serves as a member of the senior management team for the Division I FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) Athletic Program in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).  Voted a Top 10 Senior Woman Administrator in the NCAA by College AD, Mooradian was praised for her extensive compliance background and longstanding efforts to put programs in place to improve the student athlete experience. She oversaw eight sports and many internal departments, with service to several NCAA, NACDA and ACC committees. The student athlete development program she created was ranked as the #1 such program in NCAA Division I athletics last year.

"I am absolutely thrilled to be joining the Salve Regina family," Mooradian said. "I am thankful to Sister Jane Gerety and Barbara LoMonaco for this opportunity. Salve Regina offers such a rich mix of academics, service and student formation. I was able to meet with many of the students, staff and coaches, and know that it's a special place. I am looking forward to building upon the current success and reaching new levels of achievement. I am incredibly impressed by the university's mission and core values, and I look forward to working with faculty, staff and student-athletes toward the goal of student development on and off the playing field."

Mooradian has a juris doctorate from Widener University (Delaware School of Law) and a bachelor's degree from the University of New Hampshire. A former New Hampshire State Representative, she worked as in-house counsel for a major insurance company and as a litigator in a large private firm before shifting her career focus to college athletics.

She was appointed compliance assistant at UCLA in 1993, where she supported all areas of its NCAA/Pac-10 compliance, particularly Title IX review. Soon after, she was named Director of Athletics at Edinboro University, where she managed the Division II athletics program until 1997.

Prior to her arrival at BC in 2003, Mooradian served as Senior Associate Athletics Director, Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) and Interim Director of Athletics at Northeastern University. In addition to managing all internal operations for the university's Division I FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) athletic program, she handled Office of Civil Rights complaints, developed equity and diversity plans, created strategic and core values plans, and served as liaison to Northeastern's offices of Student Affairs and Student-Athlete Support Services.

In addition to serving on numerous Atlantic Coast Conference committees, Mooradian is Chair of the NCAA's Olympic Sports Liaison Committee and is a past chairman of its Women's Rowing Committee. She has also served on the NCAA Volleyball Committee and as a member of the NCAA Certification Peer Review Team.

 

She has served on the board of directors for the National Athletic Directors Association, the Collegiate Women's Sports Award, the College Athletics and the Law; Jossey-Bass Higher Education Newsletter and as a member of the National Association of Collegiate Women Administrators.

Faculty Mentor

Dr.  Barbara LoMonaco, vice president for student affairs, will serve as the men's lacrosse faculty-mentor.  LoMonaco was named vice president for student affairs at Salve Regina University, effective July 2015.  She formally served as vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky., where she is also professor of anthropology.

"Barbara LoMonaco brings both academic and student affairs experience to the Salve Regina campus community, not only as a proven manager but as an innovative programmer," President Jane Gerety said. "She is an advocate for students from all walks of life and her leadership will be invaluable as we continue our commitment to foster student engagement and success."

"I am inspired by Salve's mission and its power to transform the student experience," LoMonaco said. "My first interactions on campus told me that Salve is a special place, and I am excited and honored to become part of the community."

LoMonaco began her career in higher education in 1996 as professor of anthropology at Transylvania, where she created the anthropology major. A Bingham Award-winning professor, she has taught more than two dozen courses, including Human Origins, Healing and Culture, Urban Anthropology, Gender in Cross-Cultural Perspective, and Refugees in the Bluegrass, among others. She also taught Anthropology of Food, a class based on her interest in sustainability and producing her own food.

Appointed in 2012 as the chief student affairs officer at Transylvania, LoMonaco guided implementation of many new initiatives to bolster enrollment and retention strategies, among them a living/learning community plan, an expansion of counseling services, a First Generation Student program, the Pioneer Leadership program, and programs to boost bystander intervention, alcohol education, and awareness of diversity and inclusion concerns.

Her extensive faculty service record includes a number of positions directly related to student life, including leadership roles on the Alcohol Task Force, Judicial Council, Selection Committee for Student Orientation Leaders, Sexual Grievances Judicial Board, RA Selection Committee, and the Transylvania Scholarship Committee.

LoMonaco earned her B.A. in philosophy, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees, both in cultural anthropology, from Southern Methodist University.

LoMonaco is also a certified addictions counselor and therapist who worked in community mental health and private practice for five years in Chicago.

Athletic Trainer

Amanda Carsten joins the men's lacrosse team, as Athletic Trainer for the men's lacrosse team in 2016.  Amanda Sherman began her career at Salve Regina University in August 2005, after completing an internship at Roger Williams University

"We are very excited to have Amanda on-board for the 2016 season.  I have known her since she came to Salve, and I can see her passion for the student-athletes welfare and total development," Cooney said. 

At Salve Regina, Amanda primarily works with field hockey, women's volleyball, women's ice hockey, and men's lacrosse. She also assists with the coverage, rehabilitation, and treatment of all athletes that compete in the 19 intercollegiate sports.

A graduate of Quinnipiac University, class of 2004, with a bachelor's degree in athletic training and sports medicine, Amanda went on to receive her Master's in management from Salve Regina University in May 2012.

Amanda is a member of the National Athletic Training Association (NATA) and is licensed by the State Rhode Island.
