Seahawks fall to Lyons

NORTON, Mass. – The Salve Regina men's lacrosse team fell behind Wheaton (Mass.) 8-0 after the first half and despite a late fourth quarter rally, could not overtake the Lyons as the Seahawks fell, 15-5, in non-conference action, Wednesday afternoon.

Seniors Billy McNamara (Mansfield, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon School)Will Compton (Deering, N.H./Proctor Academy),Sean Doherty (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and Ian Casey(Medway, Mass./BB&N), junior Cam Hanlon (Hanson, Mass./BC High) and sophomore Matthew Hillman (Brookline, Mass./Brookline) all scored two goals apiece to pace the offense.

McNamara also set up three goals while freshmen Alex Keiver(North Andover, Mass./Kimball Union Academy) and Kyle Rumberger (Hyannis, Mass./Barnstable) and junior Adam Soloperto (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) rounded out the scoring for the Lyons.

Freshman Jake Pantani (Branford, Conn./Branford) accounted for four of Salve Regina's goals and classmate James Fee (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) netted his lone goal of the game at 5:09 of the third quarter. Junior Chad Hollenshade (Lutherville, Md./Avon Old Farms) dished out a team-high three assists.

Wheaton marched out to an 8-0 lead over the first stanza to eventually secure its second-straight win of the season. Bramhall stopped six shots in net while McNamara and Casey buried two goals each to highlight opening 30 minutes of action. McNamara scored with 11:44 and 7:12 on the scoreboard in the first and Casey registered tallies at 3:23 (first quarter) and 3:48 (second quarter).

In the second half, Hillman led the offensive charge with two goals. Freshman goalkeeper Ryan Clair (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood Upper School) made two saves in 9:23 of playing time in a reserve role.

The Lyons went 3-for-6 in extra man opportunities and 23-for-31 in clear attempts. Salve Regina won the ground balls matchup, 43-41, and went 14-for-24 at the face-off X. Junior Curtis McKeon (West Haven, Conn./St. Joseph) compiled a game-high 14 ground balls, all off of face-off wins.

Wheaton (2-4, 0-0 Pilgrim) travels to Clark University for its first Pilgrim League game of the season on Saturday, March 30 at 7 p.m. Salve Regina (3-6, 0-0 TCCC) hosts Roger Williams University on Wednesday, April 3 at 6 p.m.
