Seahawks drop CCC opener to Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Salve Regina University men's lacrosse team fell behind early and never recovered, dropping an 18-6 decision to Roger Williams University on Wednesday during a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) game for the Quahog Cup at Bayside Field. With the win, RWU improves their record to 6-4 overall and 3-0 in CCC play. Salve Regina's record drops to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in CCC play.

RWU came out strong in the first period of play scoring eight unanswered goals. Jon Nessa (Concord, Mass.) started the scoring run at 13:04 in the first period on an assist from Drew Beck (Salem, N.Y.).  Adam Vorwald (South Setauket, N.Y.) followed suit at 12:17 with an unassisted goal. Beck received his second assist on a goal by Cameron Signorelli (Albany, N.Y.) at 11:22. Vorwald found the net for the second time on an assist from Signorelli to go up by four. Nessa took an assist from Vorwald at 7:48 to push the lead to five. Todd Carson (Pennington, N.J.) got in on the action at 5:09 on an assist from Nessa and followed it up with an unassisted goal at 1:59. Signorelli closed the scoring run with an unassisted at 1:06.

Salve Regina's Chad Hollenshade (Lutherville, Md.) put the Seahawks on the board at 10:54 of the second period on an assist from Beau Bennardo (Rumson N.J.).  RWU's Ian Powers (Shrewsbury, Mass.) responded with his first goal of the day at 8:28 on an assist from Beck. Signorelli found the net for the third time at 8:15 on an assist from Michael Kemmy (Bristol, R.I.). Jackson Siefert (Duxbury, Mass.) stretched the lead to ten goals at 6:36 on an assist from Signorelli.

Bennardo and Hollenshade reversed roles to score the Seahawks second goal at 4:38 in the second period. Taylor Braun (Commack, N.Y.) followed up with a score at 3:22 to bring the score to cut the lead to eight. RWU's Powers added his second goal with Kemmy got his second assist on the play. John Ricciardi (Duxbury, Mass.) finished the first half scoring at 1:45 to bring the game to 13-3.

Play in the third was a physical defensive struggle with only three shot finding the net.  RWU's Nessa scored his second goal on an assist from Carson. Vorwald added his third goal and his second unassisted effort of the day.  Salve Regina's Hollenshade and Bennardo hooked up again to finish the third period and bring the score to 15-4.

Kemmy led the Hawks scoring efforts in the final period finding the net twice and assisting Powers for the last goal for Roger Williams.  Bennardo scored at 1:37 for Salve on assist from Zach Alexander (Falmouth, Maine) and Bryan Walsh (North Andover, Mass.) the last goal of the game unassisted with 0:56 to play.

Evan Simone (Dover, N.H.) had 15 saves on the loss with Jackson Petri (Wenham, Mass.) stopped 3 shots.

Luke Aubrey (Norwalk, Conn.) had 8 saves on the win while sharing with duties Alex Peebles (Guilderland, N.Y.) who tallied 4 saves.

Salve Regina had a slight edge in face offs while and RWU took the ground ball statistic.

Salve Regina will be at Nichols Wednesday, 4/11 at 7:00 p.m., and Roger Williams will travel to Milton, Mass. to take on Curry College Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
