Hawks fly Past Seahawks, 17-11

BRISTOL, R.I. - The RWU Men's Lacrosse Team earned a 17-11 Commonwealth Coast Conference victory Wednesday over the visiting Seahawks of Salve Regina University. Junior Drew Smith (Blue Point, N.Y.) led all scorers in the game with six goals and two assists.

With just a two-goal lead for the hosts heading into the final quarter, RWU took just 59 seconds to extend its lead to 12-9 on a goal by junior Logan Roebuck (Montgomery, N.Y.). Only 41 seconds later RWU junior Jim Turenne (Bristol, R.I.) tallied an unassisted goal and another at the 11:23 mark to move RWU ahead 14-9.

Back-to-back goals by Salve Regina sophomores Chris Walker (Marshfield, Mass.) and Brendan Carroll (Garden City, N.Y.) at 9:32 and 8:01, respectively, put the Seahawks back within striking distance. Only the hosts controlled possession for much of the remaining time and registered three goals in the final 3:33 of the game to secure their second-straight TCCC win.

The Seahawks jumped out to the game's early lead, as four different players scored for a 4-0 lead at 9:09 of the first quarter, forcing a timeout by Hawks head coach Marty Kelly. The team responded with back-to-back goals, but allowed Seahawks junior Brendan Rooney (West Newton, Mass.) to score before the first quarter ended with Salve Regina ahead, 5-2.

Carroll added to his team's lead 40 seconds into the second quarter, but the remainder was dominated by RWU. The Hawks tallied six-straight goals within 5:43 to gain a lead they would not relinquish. Rooney scored again before the end of the quarter for a 9-8 score at the break.

The teams traded goals early in the third before both were held scoreless for over nine minutes. RWU freshman Drew Beck (Cross River, N.Y.) ended the drought at 3:43 and Turenne followed up 1:11 later. Salve Regina sophomore Kevin Murphy (Yorba Linda, Calif.) scored with 28 seconds remaining for an 11-9 score heading into the final frame.

Walker finished the game with a game-high three goals, while teammates Carroll and Taylor Braun (Commack, N.Y.) both finished with three points. Senior Nathaniel Burns (Sandwich, Mass.) and graduate student Nick Clark (Rye, N.H.) led Salve Regina in ground balls with 10 and nine, respectively. Seahawks freshman goalkeeper Christopher Connors posted 14 saves in 60 minutes.

Hawks goalkeeper Tyler Roebuck (Montgomery, N.Y.) recorded 15 saves in the contest, along with seven ground balls. Junior Austin Fehringer (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) led RWU with 10 ground balls. Junior Logan Roebuck (Montgomery, N.Y.) notched two goals and two assists for four points on the day.

RWU continues TCCC play Saturday when it travels to Boston, Mass., for a 1 p.m. game against Wentworth Institute of Technology. The Seahawks meanwhile host TCCC opponent Anna Maria College Saturday at 1 p.m.
