Nor'easters drop Seahawks 2-0 after scoreless first period

BIDDEFORD, Maine. (Friday, February 16, 2024)-- In the last game of the 2023-24 regular season the Salve Regina Seahawks slipped 2-0 to the University of New England Nor'easters in CCC action. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: University of New England 2, Salve Regina 0
Records: Salve Regina (15-8-2, 10-6-2 CCC), University of New England (16-5-4, 10-4-4 CCC)
All-Time Series: Going into the evening Salve Regina was 8-11-1 against the University of New England beginning with the 2009-10 season. 

BREAKDOWN: 

Salve Regina won the opening faceoff and outshot the University of New England 11-10 in the first period, but 20 minutes went in the books as a 0-0 tie. It wasn't until 19:27 down in the second period that the Nor'easters inched ahead when they scored off a bounce for a 1-0 game with one period left in regulation. The Seahawks outshot the Nor'easters 15-13 in the second 20 minutes of play. 

Salve Regina looked to pull even with the University of New England, as they only trailed by one point going into the third period. However, just over four minutes in, Nor'easters' Chip Hamlett doubled the team's lead to make it 2-0. With tonight's loss Salve Regina enters the post season sitting in fourth place in the CCC. The University of New England moves to the third-place spot in the conference. 

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Salve Regina outshot the University of New England 36-30.
  • Nor'easters' Billy Girard is credited with the win. He moves to 12-4-4 for the season. 
  • The Seahawks served six minutes on three infractions and the Nor'easters were called on four infractions, spending eight minutes in the penalty box. 

ON THE HORIZON: 

Tonight's matchup marks the last regular season contest of the 2023-24 season. No. 4 Salve Regina will host No.5 Wentworth Institute of Technology on Wednesday, February 21 at the Cabot-Harman Ice Center.
